Have you ever had a dream where you bite into something and your teeth just start breaking apart and falling out?! It may cause a panic but don’t worry – your teeth are stronger than you think! And as long as you get them cleaned and examined every six months, brush and floss twice a day, and take care of them as best as you can, they will be just as good to you.
Tooth enamel is the hardest substance in the body. This surface is made up mostly of minerals (96%) with water and organic material composing the rest. Since enamel does not contain living cells, like bones do, it cannot repair itself when it starts to break down. Protecting your enamel is important, and can be achieved by staying away from foods and drinks that are high in sugar and acid.
Did you know your teeth (with the help of your jaw – also extremely strong) can exert an average of 200 pounds of pressure when you bite down? This is beneficial for eating, but try to stay away from using your teeth as tools. Though your teeth have the power to do so, it isn’t healthy and can result in damage.
