Cavities, or tooth decay, are more common than you think. According to the Association of Health Care Journalists, in 2015, 92% of adults have cavities in permanent teeth. 27% continue without treating that decay. If cavities are so common, what causes them and how do we know if we have one?
It’s not an unknown fact that we have bacteria that lives in our mouths. When that bacteria builds up, and forms plaque on our teeth, that can cause decay and cavities. Left unseen and untreated by dental professionals, the decay can spread and eventually lead to tooth loss. If you’re concerned you might have a cavity, or even a couple, come in for an exam so we can treat it before it becomes an even bigger issue.
Tooth decay can also be caused by genetics. If a parent both has tooth decay, it will likely transfer to their children and so on.
