You hear it all the time: “Number one dentist approved brand!” How many of you thought of gum as more of a candy or treat? I definitely did. Believe it or not, chewing gum actually does have some benefits to oral health!
The American Dental Association (ADA) has put their stamp of approval on several sugar-free gums. They state the act of chewing creates a salivary flow which breaks up plaque on the surface of your teeth. It also will neutralize acids and prevent damage to your enamel. Chewing gum for at least 20 minutes after each meal will help prevent gum diseases like gingivitis as well! You are still recommended to use a fluoride – infused toothpaste twice a day, and don’t forget to floss, but it is great to know that there are some good gums to chew on that protect your teeth as well! Orbit, Extra, and Trident are just a few brands that have the ADA stamp on their packaging, but if you are unsure, it’s the safer choice to stick with a sugar-free gum.
