Well, it’s official. Summer for Duluth, MN is over! Kiddos are back in school, leaves have been changing for a couple weeks already, and the forecast is looking a little chillier. September can be beautiful as long as we can catch a break from rainy days!
September is not only known for its beautiful transition into Fall, it is also National Gum Care Month! Not only do your gums protect your teeth, but if they aren’t in good health it will affect the condition of your teeth as well. Without taking proper care of your gums, it could result in gingivitis. Gingivitis is inflammation of the gums caused by a bacterial infection. This is caused by a buildup of plaque in the gum line. Left untreated, gingivitis could turn into periodontitis, which could result in tooth loss. Tooth extractions could cost you over $500.00 depending on the case, whereas proper gum care can take as much as a toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss! Your dental hygienist will go over gum care with you at your routine dental appointments, and they will show you how to properly brush and floss your teeth at home.
First symptoms of Gingivitis are:
- Red, tender, swollen gums
- Gums that bleed when you brush or floss
- Pain and sensitivity when chewing
- Loose teeth
- Malocclusion (when your teeth don’t fit together when you bite down)
Healthy gums = healthy teeth!
